Rotary
Rebuilds
As of July 2008 - 16 homes
have been built and are now occupied by happy people.
More planned, but funds
are needed.
On August 29,
2005, nearly 80% of the homes and buildings in Pass Christians were either
disappeared or were so
severely damaged that they condemned by authorities. Federal and
state government, insurance,
and other health and human services came to The Pass as they did to
countless others in the Gulf Coast. It has been nearly three years
and most of the services, agencies, and assistance has left. Pass Christian's Rotary Club has persevered to
maintain an awareness of the their community's continued plight, but,
more so, have been working very hard to create worthwhile projects and
continuing to reach out to fellow Rotarians and other groups and
agencies to fund them.

Rebuilding in
such areas come with new rules and regulations. The Rotarians
learned while the government and agencies were in the assistance stage
that some local residents people would not be able to
replace their homes lost during the hurricane. The bottom-line was
that some people did not qualify for federal or state guidelines for any assistance.
Rotarians learned that the numbers were over 100 in their small
community. People who had property, but no means to rebuild their homes.
Rotary
Rebuilds was initiated by the Pass Christian Rotary Club and its president in 2005, D.H. Short II, local medical doctor. Rotary Rebuilds
was the first of nine projects that the Club has
not only managed to fund through their Rotary Charity Fund which has
been in place since 1976,. Through donations and gifts, Pass Christian
with the Mennonite Disaster Service has been able
to build homes thus far with more planned, as long as their are funds
to make it happen. DH has traveled coast-to-coast and even into
Canada. He has even worked with Rotary clubs in other countries toward
the goal of "Pass Christian Rises." The PROJECTS page in this
website outlines the types of projects. We will now share pictures of
the ten homes that have been built with the cooperation and unselfish
work of the Mennonite Disaster Service, who provide the labor and
expertise while Rotary provides the funding for materials. We will
continue to add stories to this site about the people in those homes.
Not just words, but
action, good practices, efficient use of materials, and the donations
from caring people and organizations.
