Pass Christian
Library Background Information
Dwelling
The pre-Katrina
building was approximately 35 years old. The City of Pass Christian is
responsible for the library dwelling. It was a one story masonry
building. Following Katrina, the building was closed and its contents
destroyed. Architects believe that the dwelling can be renovated. The
projected cost for reconstruction of the dwelling is $1,250,000. This
figure was derived from the City Comptroller in late 2005. The City is
expected to receive financial assistance for this project through
federal and state sources. It does not appear the FEMA will provide
recovery funds for the library. The City will have to fund between five
to ten percent of the reconstruction costs of the dwelling.
A temporary library
has been set up six blocks from pre-Katrina Library. The current
library is a double-wide trailer, approximately 70x36 feet in diameter.
The Rotary Club and the Friends of the Library provided all of the
utility hook-ups and ramps for this facility. The DuPont Company set up
this trailer in October 2005. There was a stipulation that it would be
free for two years.
Note: The City is
projected to receive approximately $700,000 of insurance money for
all of its community dwellings including city hall, police,
public works, public services, the lib rary, and any other
dwelling/office.
Contents
Library
contents are a responsibility of the County Harrison, Mississippi.
Following Katrina, eight libraries in the county were significantly
damaged. Pass Christian’s library was totally damaged. The County of
Harrison is only received fifty cents on the budgeted dollar for library
contents. The estimated cost for Pass Christian’s library contents is
$300,000 to $400,000.
