Rotary Club of Pass Christian, Mississippi

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the small community of Pass Christian, Mississippi with the highest storm surge to hit the Gulf Coast with 36-38 foot waves.  It took lives, homes, all city buildings, all city light and heavy equipment, pets, governmental services, roads, utilities, but not the spirit and dedication of The Rotary Club of Pass Christian.

Since Katrina, the Rotary Club led by Dwight H. Short, II, M.D. has taken its plight of his community throughout the United States, Canada, Jamaica, and even to other countries to raise money for homes for needy people, the local library, the community center, vehicles for town's public works, sewer system--National Toilet Paper Roll-Out, a public restroom for the local park, a handicapped playground, assistance to the local police station, and a literacy program adult education.

That's 9 projects!  District 6840 awarded Pass Christian the small club of the in year for 2007. That's why the Pass Christian Rotarians call themselves,

"The Little Club that Can!"

Pass Christian Rotary Club has an excellent record of applying gifts and donations into the Projects named above.  In early 2008, two new programs were introduced --The National Toilet Paper Roll-Out (part of the Sewer Project) and the new police station content fund (part of the Police Station Project).  Your generosity can make all of these programs continue to slowly but surely be successful and fulfill that Pass Christian Rises.

Hurricane Katrina disrupted 20,000 feet of sewer on the south side of our town.  At $200/linear foot, the estimated cost for replacement is $4,000,000.  We should get help from FEMA, the FEDS and the State government.  But, the city still will be responsible for 5-10% of the cost.

“Rotary Rebuilds” is our project to provide homes for the less fortunate in “The Pass”.  Eighty percent of our homes were significantly damaged or destroyed.  Our goal is to rebuild 100 homes for the needy, at no cost to them.  These structures will be 1,200 square feet, raised 18 feet for an estimated cost of $50,000.  The Mennonite Disaster Service builds these homes for us at no cost.   Rotary of PC provides all funding and case managers.  Approximate plumbing cost for these homes is $6,000 each.  Keeping in mind that a sewer begins with a commode and sink, these two projects (The Sewer and Rotary Rebuilds) are a perfect fit.  Home rebuilding is paramount.  Our Rotary project will raise funds for the sewer replacement and provide plumbing supplies for our Rotary Home Rebuilds project.  The “National Toilet Paper Roll-Out benefits Pass Christian’s efforts to rebuild its sewer system and to provide plumbing supplies for homes being rebuilt for the less fortunate by Rotary and the Mennonite Disaster Services
